Former Ghana Premier League side, Berekum Arsenal have been relegated to the Division Two League after a 2-0 defeat to Bofoakwa Tano FC in Zone One B of the Division One League.
Arsenal needed a point to escape relegation, but the leaders showed no mercy as they cruised to a comfortable victory 2-0 at Sunyani Coronation Park on Sunday, courtesy of goals from Enock Abuu and Hamza Gonji.
The defeat means the Berekum-based club will now compete in the Division Two League. They sit seventh in Zone One B with 35 points after 27 matches. With one game left to end the campaign, Arsenal cannot claw their way back above the dreaded drop zone.
The club was relegated to the Division One League in 2013. They were relegated after they placed 14th on the league table and have been struggling to get back to the elite division since their relegation from the Premier League.
Bofoakwa Tano will battle Zone One A leaders, Eleven Wonders on May 30th at the Accra Sports Stadium in the Division One League Championship playoff in their quest to qualify for the Premier League.
Famous sports journalist, Sadick Adams posted this on Facebook before the game:
“Two seasons ago, Bofokwa Tano needed a win over neighbors Berekum Arsenal, to qualify for the GPL at the expense of RTU.
“Arsenal fans did this flier to wit, “for the Palm Tree to die, the Cocoa Tree should die rather”. It meant, for their neighbors Bofo to qualify for the Premier League, it would be better for Real Tamale club to qualify.
“At the end of the match, Arsenal held Bofoakwa to a goalless draw. RTU thus qualified.
“Today, Arsenal needs a point to escape relegation.
“They will play away to leaders Bofoakwa who do not need a point for anything.
“Me: Football should be the winner.
What do you think?😂😂😂”
