Legon Cities defender, Frank Akoto, has echoed the sentiments of many players in the Ghana Premier League, stating that one can not make a living from playing in the league due to the poor remuneration.
According to Akoto, the meager pay for players has prompted them to seek better offers outside Ghana, with some earning as low as 500Gh cedis.
Akoto, who signed a one-year deal with Legon Cities prior to the 2023/24 season, highlighted the huge responsibilities that footballers have to perform as they become the breadwinners for their families.
Many players’ livelihoods depend on their football careers, making it challenging for them to survive on the current pay scales.
“Yes, on the other hand I agree 100% with him because earlier I made mentioned that there is no money in our system.
That is why every young player wants to leave the shores of Ghana, the same applies to the experienced players as well.
Because domestically, there is no money in our football, and once you’re a footballer, you’re a star, and you become the eye of your family. I think I agree to that assertion made by Bernard Arthur,” he said in an interview with LinusSiaw TV.
“I’ve achieved something little for myself but you see, not all the team have the fanbase like Kotoko and Hearts so when you get the opportunity to play for either of them, you’d surely make something out of it unlike the other clubs”
The 26-year-old defender, who has represented Ghana at the under-23 level, made 30 appearances for Legon Cities last season, primarily as a center-back under coach Paa Kwesi Fabin. He is also a former player of Heart of Lions, having captained the side for years.
