Sudan, led by former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, fell to a 2-1 defeat against Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Monday in Luanda.
This marks Appiah’s first loss since taking charge of Sudan, ending their hopes of building on a winning start after defeating Niger.
Angola took the lead in the 51st minute when veteran striker Mabululu converted a penalty. Sudan quickly responded, with Mustafa Karshoum equalizing just four minutes later.
However, Randy Nteka’s late strike in the 82nd minute secured all three points for Angola, giving them a perfect six points from two games. The loss is a significant setback for Sudan, especially after a hard-fought performance.
Angola’s victory also follows their shock 1-0 win over Ghana, which ended the Black Stars’ 24-year unbeaten record at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
Sudan will now focus on a crucial October doubleheader against Ghana, with both teams looking to claim vital points. Ghana, still winless in the qualifiers, trails Angola by five points and Sudan by two.
The upcoming matches promise to be intense, with Sudan hoping to capitalize on Ghana’s struggles and strengthen their position in Group F.
