Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah has led Sudan to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking their first appearance in the tournament since 2012.
Appiah, who was appointed Sudan’s head coach in September 2023, has worked diligently with his team, setting ambitious goals of AFCON qualification and a push for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Today, one of those objectives was realized as Sudan clinched their spot in Africa’s premier football tournament.
In a decisive final Group F match against Angola, who had already qualified, Sudan only needed a point to confirm their place. Despite a challenging contest, the team held their ground to secure a goalless draw at home, earning the crucial point required.
The result saw Sudan finish second in the group with 8 points, edging out Niger, who managed 7 points. Ghana, shockingly, finished last in the group with just 3 points, marking their absence from the AFCON for the first time since 2004. Appiah’s achievement represents a major milestone for Sudanese football, reigniting hopes for a strong showing in Morocco next year.
With qualification secured, the focus now shifts to preparations for the tournament, where Sudan will aim to make a significant impact under Appiah’s leadership.
