Former Asante Kotoko defender Awal Mohammed has suggested that the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League season should be canceled following the tragic passing of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley.
Awal believes the unfortunate incident presents an opportunity for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the government to restructure and address the issues plaguing Ghanaian football.
“We have to play the league, regardless. But we have to capitalize on this opportunity to put things in place,” Awal told GhanaSportsPage.com
“Even if we don’t play the remaining matches, there is nothing wrong. We will start afresh next season because we can’t correct things within just three or four weeks. Someone has died.”
His comments come in the wake of growing concerns about the state of Ghanaian football, including officiating standards, club management, and infrastructure.
“This is an opportunity for the GFA, with the government’s support, to do things right. Our football is declining. We have to reset,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Premier League, which went on an abrupt break, will resume with Matchday 23 on the weekend of Friday, March 7, to Monday, March 10, 2025, according to the GFA.
The resumption is subject to the safety and security assurance inspection of all venues currently being undertaken by the GFA and the Ministry for Sports and Recreation.
