Sudan national team head coach James Kwesi Appiah has shed light on the reasons behind his delayed return to the team’s training camp, citing both financial issues and a personal commitment.
The Ghanaian tactician confirmed that delayed salary payments played a role in his absence but added that he also chose to stay in Ghana to attend the funeral of the late Asante Kotoko supporter, Yaw Frimpong (Pooley).
“Actually, I delayed because of Pooley’s funeral. They were also delaying some payments, but I’ve met their embassy, so hopefully, I’ll leave tomorrow,” Appiah told Ghanasportspage.com.
Since guiding Sudan to AFCON 2025 qualification, Appiah has been in Ghana, but his return to duty was initially scheduled much earlier to oversee preparations for Sudan’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
His extended stay has slightly disrupted Sudan’s training plans in Saudi Arabia, where the team is fine-tuning tactics ahead of crucial fixtures against Senegal and South Sudan.
With his financial concerns now settled, Appiah is set to return, aiming to continue Sudan’s impressive progress under his leadership.
