Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he battled depression about a year ago, using his personal experience to highlight the importance of mental health awareness.
Gyan made the disclosure on Wednesday during his unveiling as an ambassador by the Ghana Football Association at the Pelican Hotel in Accra.
“About a year ago, I had problems which led to depression,” Gyan said during the ceremony.
The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker stressed that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of status or achievements.
“Everybody can go through this stuff,” he added.
Gyan’s candid remarks came as he officially assumed a new role with the GFA ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As part of his ambassadorial duties, the all-time leading scorer for the Black Stars will spearhead promotional campaigns, fan engagement activities, and initiatives aimed at mobilising support for the national team ahead of the tournament in North America.
He is also expected to represent the GFA at official events and contribute to the promotion of Ghana’s national teams and youth football development programmes.
