Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has revealed that the Black Stars’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be announced on June 1.
The announcement comes after Ghana’s 2-0 loss against Mexico in the early hours of Saturday, which featured a youthful side made up largely of U-23 players and fringe national team members.
In a post on social media following the match, Okraku described the exercise as a success, highlighting the opportunities it provided for players pushing for places in the senior national team.
“Objective accomplished! This event has provided significant stage exposure for the majority of our U-23 players, who will soon assemble for the Olympic qualifiers, as well as other players who had limited playing time,” he wrote on Facebook.
“The World Cup squad announcement is scheduled for June 1st. Let’s maintain our collective support for our stars!!”
The GFA president’s comments suggest the technical team used the Mexico friendly primarily as an assessment exercise ahead of the global tournament, giving several emerging talents the chance to impress.
Attention will now turn to Carlos Queiroz and his technical team as they prepare to name Ghana’s final squad for the World Cup, where the Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
