France 1998 World Cup winner, Marcel Desailly has backed Ghana’s head coach Carlos Queiroz as they head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 73-year old Portuguese tactician was appointed on a short term deal to guide Ghana to the Mundial following the sack of Otto Addo in March. Carlos who has managed the Egyptian national men’s team and South Africa will be at the touch line during the Black Stars campaign at the 23rd FIFA World Cup edition.
He’s expected to inspire the West African country to a successful tournament, having seen Ghana perform abysmally in their last two appearance.
As Ghana marks their fifth appearance, Desailly believes Carlos Queiroz has enough experience in European football over the years and can safeguard Ghana to a glory tournament. Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has set their target at reaching the round of 16 with the tournament co-hosted by USA, Mexico and Canada.
“He [Carlos Queiroz] has real experience in European football over the years. So he will kill a little bit of the egos. In Africa, we have a problem with the egos. The older players that are in the team, who are no longer performing, but they are still there, and you cannot move them out”, Marcel told Flashscore.
Ghana has been drawn in a difficult Group L which has Panama, England and Croatia.
The four-time African champions will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia on June 27.
