Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo who inspired Black Stars to their first win in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup has expressed delight and excitement following a deserving victory over Panama in their Group L opener.
The Manchester City man secured a start for the Black Stars against Panama, ensuring his presence on the pitch earned Ghana victory before end of proceeding at the BMO Field on Wednesday. It was a late goal in the stoppage time from midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi handing Ghana all points.
With Antoine Semenyo enjoying full throttle of the game, was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the match after a standout performance.
Semenyo was a constant threat to the Panama defence, using his pace and direct running to create Ghana’s most dangerous moments. Semenyo played a key role in the build-up to Caleb Yirenkyi’s winner, stretching Panama with his movement before Brandon Asante found Yirenkyi to score.
Speaking after the game, Antoine showed excitement for the win and playing at the World Cup. He was selected alongside four World Cup debutants, in Carlos Queiroz starting lineup.
“I’m just happy we got the three points. It’s a dream to play at the World Cup and to help the team win the first game means everything,” Semenyo said after receiving his award.
This is Semenyo’s second FIFA World Cup tournament, having made his Black Stars debut in 2022.
