Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has revealed that he would be willing to resign from his position if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) believes his departure would provide a solution to the country’s football problems.
The Portuguese coach made the comments following the Black Stars’ dramatic 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Ghana appeared to be in control of the contest after establishing a two-goal advantage, but The Gambia produced a remarkable comeback to score four unanswered goals and condemn the Black Stars to their second successive defeat in Group C.
“Myself, the staff and all the players were deeply sad about the result and we say sorry to the Ghana supporters,” the Ghana head coach said after his side suffered a damaging defeat to The Gambia.
The result has intensified scrutiny on Queiroz, who was reappointed by the GFA earlier this month to continue as head coach after guiding Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The GFA had cited his international experience and knowledge of the team when confirming his new mandate.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Queiroz was asked about his future amid growing concerns over Ghana’s poor start to the qualifying campaign.
“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” he said.
The defeat means Ghana have now lost both of their opening Group C matches, having previously suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké. The Black Stars therefore remain without a point from their first two games.
The latest setback is particularly damaging given that Ghana missed out on the 2025 AFCON and entered the current campaign hoping to secure a return to the continental tournament.
Queiroz had called for an attacking performance before Tuesday’s match, insisting that Ghana needed to dominate possession and play with a positive mindset. He had also urged supporters to back the players available to him.
However, surrendering a two-goal lead at home has now left the Black Stars facing a difficult path in their bid to qualify for the 2027 tournament.
The responsibility for determining Queiroz’s future now rests with the GFA, while Ghana must regroup and find a way to revive its qualifying campaign in the remaining fixtures.
