Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan was overcome with emotion on Saturday as he bid farewell to his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, who was laid to rest in Accra.
In emotional scenes captured on video, the Ghana legend struggled to hold back tears as he stood alongside his elder brother, former Ghana international Baffour Gyan, during the funeral rites.
Baffour read a tribute in honour of their late father as the brothers paid their final respects.
George Gyan Baffour Mensah died on June 29, 2026, at the age of 82, following a short illness. The family held his one-week observance on August 21 at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools astroturf in Mallam-Gbawe.
Gyan announced his father’s death on July 24, paying tribute to the man he credited with supporting him throughout his life and football career.
“I’m happy you saw my greatness, Da. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (ASASE J),” he wrote.
The former striker remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals and holds the record for the most goals scored by an African at the FIFA World Cup, with six.
He represented Ghana at three World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014, playing a key role in the Black Stars’ historic run to the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.
