Ghana coach CK Akonnor will name his squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan in the coming hours, but the euphoria seems low compared to anxiety that preceded the squad naming before this month’s friendlies against Mali and Qatar.
Ghana will take on the Falcons on Thursday, November 12, 2020 in the first leg of a double header tie at the Cape Coast stadium, before travelling to Khartoum, five days later for the reverse fixture.
It will be only the third time Akonnor will be naming a squad of his own for an assignment after first naming a 23-man squad for the same games which was eventually canceled due to the emergence of covid-19.
The Ex Ghana skipper guided the Black Stars to a convincing 5-1 victory against Asian champions Qatar in a friendly, following a 3-0 defeat in the hands of Mali in another friendly match earlier this month.
There was great anxiety among the media and football lovers ahead of the naming of the Black Stars squad for the friendlies against Mali and Qatar, but the atmosphere looks pretty calm now as Akonnor prepares to name his squad for what will be his first official games as head coach of the national team.
According to the GFA, “Black Stars Head Coach @akonnor_ck to announce squad for double header against Sudan Live on GFA NEWS today at 4:30pm”, which will be less than two hours from the time of filing this article.
Ghana began the AFCON qualifiers with a flying start under the then coach James Kwasi Appiah with victories over South Africa and São Tomé and Príncipe in November last year, and Akonnor seeks to keep the fire blazing with victories over the North African side in the two headers slated for next month.
