The Black Satellites of Ghana narrowly missed out on the gold medal at the 2024 WAFU Zone B U20 Championship, suffering a 2-1 defeat to rivals Nigeria in a thrilling final on Wednesday night at Stade de Kégue.
Despite a commendable effort and a goal from standout forward Jerry Afriyie, Ghana could not navigate past a determined Nigerian side that ultimately clinched the championship title.
Afriyie, who has shone throughout the tournament, added to his impressive tally with his fifth goal, but it proved insufficient to turn the tide in the final. However, Ghana’s strong performance during the tournament has ensured their qualification for the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, providing them another opportunity to vie for a spot in the FIFA U20 World Cup.
In the earlier match for third place, Ivory Coast secured the bronze medal by defeating Niger 2-1. As the Black Satellites return home with silver, their journey in this year’s WAFU Zone B U20 Championship lays a promising foundation for future competitions.
