Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder Mohammed Hussein has issued a heartfelt public apology following his confrontation with the referee after his side’s Ghana Premier League defeat to Asante Kotoko on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
In a statement posted on social media, Hussein expressed deep remorse for his behavior, admitting that his actions at the end of the game were unacceptable and fell short of the standards expected of a professional footballer.
“With a heavy heart, I sincerely apologise to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the referee, my teammates, our cherished supporters, and the wider football community. What happened after the final whistle was unacceptable, and I take full responsibility for my behaviour,” he wrote.
Hussein explained that frustration during the match clouded his judgment, leading to an emotional reaction he now regrets.
“Throughout the game, I felt frustrated and felt I was being persistently fouled without protection from the referees. In that moment of emotion, I allowed frustration to cloud my judgment. Instead of showing restraint and respect, I reacted wrongly and I regret it deeply.”
He extended a personal apology to the referee involved, acknowledging the vital role officials play in ensuring fairness and integrity in football.
“I respect the difficult role referees play in ensuring fairness, and I humbly ask for your forgiveness for my lapse in judgment.”
Hussein also reassured fans and the football community of his commitment to personal growth and discipline moving forward.
“I promise to learn from this painful experience. I will work harder to remain calm under pressure, to honour the Phobia badge I love and wear, and to uphold the dignity of our beautiful game.”
The apology comes after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) charged both Hearts of Oak and Mohammed Hussein with misconduct following the post-match incident. The player has pledged to make amends and restore trust as the case awaits a disciplinary outcome.
