Former Black Stars forward Augustine Arhinful has called for improvements in Benjamin Asare’s communication and decision-making following Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Wales in their final preparatory match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Sporty FM’s Sporty Breakfast, Arhinful praised the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper’s progress but suggested there are areas of his game that require further development at the highest level.
“Benjamin Asare has to be spoken to. His communication and how he comes out needs to improve,” Arhinful said.
The former Ghana international specifically highlighted Asare’s handling of aerial situations, arguing that the goalkeeper often appears uncertain when dealing with crosses into the penalty area.
“He’s always found wanting when there’s a cross into our box,” Arhinful added.
Arhinful also raised questions about Asare’s positioning during Wales’ equalising goal, suggesting the goalkeeper may have been able to do more to prevent the strike.
“The question is, could he have done something about the goal Wales scored, considering his positioning?” he asked.
Asare has emerged as one of Ghana’s most improved goalkeepers in recent months and has earned praise for his performances with both Hearts of Oak and the Black Stars. However, Arhinful believes that with the World Cup approaching, attention to detail will be crucial for the shot-stopper and the entire team.
The Black Stars are set to continue their preparations ahead of the tournament, with the technical team expected to assess the team’s performance from the Wales friendly before the start of the World Cup campaign.
