Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end on Saturday morning after a disciplined Colombia side secured a deserved 1-0 victory in their Round of 32 encounter at the Kansas City Stadium.
The Black Stars battled bravely throughout the contest but struggled to trouble the Colombian defence, failing to register a single shot on target as Los Cafeteros progressed to the Round of 16.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz made two notable changes to his starting XI, recalling Lawrence Ati-Zigi after the goalkeeper recovered from injury.
Derrick Luckassen also retained his place in the team after scoring on his FIFA World Cup debut in Ghana’s previous outing.
Colombia made an aggressive start and found the breakthrough in the 14th minute. Prolific striker Luis Suarez delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area and Jhon Arias timed his run perfectly before guiding his finish beyond Ati-Zigi to give the South Americans an early lead.
The Colombians continued to dominate possession and looked the more threatening side throughout the opening half.
They nearly doubled their advantage moments before the break when Johan Mojica met a cross with a powerful header, but Ati-Zigi produced an outstanding reflex save to keep Ghana in the contest.
The Black Stars attempted to respond after halftime but found it difficult to create meaningful openings against Colombia’s organised defence.
Ghana lacked creativity in the final third and ended the match without testing the Colombian goalkeeper, failing to register a shot on target over the 90 minutes.
Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack and Ati-Zigi was once again called into action in the 58th minute, producing a spectacular save to deny Luis DÃaz from close range.
The St. Gallen goalkeeper continued his impressive performance with another excellent stop later in the second half to prevent Colombia from extending their lead.
Despite Ghana’s determination and defensive resilience, Colombia comfortably managed the closing stages and deservedly held on for victory.
The result brings Ghana’s World Cup journey to an end after reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 2010.
Although eliminated, the Black Stars can reflect on a spirited campaign that saw them emerge from a difficult group before eventually falling to one of South America’s strongest teams.
The victory keeps Colombia’s their World Cup dream alive as they march into the Round of 16, buoyed by another composed and professional display.
