Having resumed camping for preparations for FIFA World Cup qualifiers five days ago, seven players of the national U-17 female team, the Black Maidens, and the national U-20 female team, the Black Princesses have tested positive for the novel coronaviurs disease, the FA has confirmed.
The two teams began camping in Cape Coast since August 13 this year to step up preparations for the 2020 FIFA U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, but results from the covid-19 test carried out on the players and technical staff of the teams have revealed seven (7) of the players from both teams combined have contracted the virus.
“Unfortunately some of the players have tested positive for the coronavirus”, Henry Asante Twum, Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed, speaking to Asempa Ultimate Sports Show in Accra.
From the camp of the Black Princesses, four (4) of the players tested positive out of the total of 31 in camp, while the Maidens recorded three (3) positive cases out the 30 players in camp, making it seven (7) positive cases in all. The FA has taken steps to isolated those players who tested positive from the camp and sent them to an isolation centre in the central region to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine while treatments will be given them.
“We had to do what is important, so we had to isolate those who had tested positive, Princesses (U-20) were four and Maidens (U-17) were three. As I speak to you they have been isolated. They are at a facility in the central region, they will go through the 14-day quarantine and then they will be tested again after the 14-day quarantine”, Henry told Asempa Ultimate Sports Show.
Henry Twum stated that the FA had made provisions against eventualities of a positive covid-19 case before the players moved to camp, and that the situation will not affect or distort their programme in any way.
