Ashanti Gold Sporting Club continue to grapple around results accumulation after suffering yet another defeat to Karela United in the Matchday 19 tie of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) on Sunday afternoon.
Ashantigold have not been in the best of form this season, displaying a high level of inconsistency in their results accumulation in the league, and the situation remained unchanged against Karela United on Sunday. The Miners went into the game with the mindset of redeeming themselves after enduring a 1-4 home defeat to Eleven Wonders last week, but it never went as desired for the Obuasi based side.
Their opponents, Karela United were also coming from a 2-0 defeat away to Aduana Stars last weekend, and they were burnt on capitalising on the home advantage to return to winning ways, which they successfully did against the four times champions of the league.
The visitors started the game well on the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park astroturf where they held Karela United to a balanced game in the first 10 minutes of play. The determination finally paid off when they managed to unlock the defence of the home side to break the deadlock through Eric Esso in the 21st minute of the game.
Karela United held on to the pressure and presented a determined response as they fought back to cancel the deficit through Matthew Kelvin Andoh, who slotted home a team-play effort to bring the scoreline to a 1-1 level four minutes to half time. The scoreline stayed 1-1 till half time.
Karela United returned from the break with more urgency in their play, and took less than 10 minutes to score their second. Kelvin Andoh finished off a brilliant pass laid to him to put the home side to a 2-1 lead just 8 minutes after the break to complete his brace.
The game now entered the game management mode as the two coaches varied their tactics in search of a favourable result. Ashgold pressed harder looking for the equalizer but it wasn’t meant to be and the game finished 2-1 in favour of Karela United.
Kelvin Andoh was adjudged the most valuable player of the match.
In six premier league matches, Ashantigold have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 3. They have scored 7 goals and conceded 11 in the process.
