Accra Hearts of Oak have disclosed the next destination of their deputy captain Mohammed Alhassan should the defender turns down contract extension negotiations with the club.
The 29-year-old defender joined Hearts of Oak from West African Football Football Academy (WAFA) in 2018 after a three-year stint with the academy boys following from promotion from the junior team.
He made his senior debut on 20 February 2016, starting a league match against Kumasi Asante Kotoko. He played the full match as WAFA won by 2 – 0. He went on to play 26 league matches that season, with WAFA ending the season at second place as their highest ever rank.
Alhassan joined Rainbows as a free agent in December 2018 on a four-year contract. On 31 March 2019, he made his debut as a starter in a 1-0 victory over Dreams FC. He played 14 out of 15 league matches during the 2019 GFA Normalization Committee Special Competition to help Hearts place first in group B and qualify for the Championship play-off semi-finals.
During the second half of last season, after the appointment of Samuel Boadu, he formed a defensive partnership with Robert Addo Sowah. With the duo playing together, the team recorded eleven matches unbeaten streak which finally resulted in them winning the league, after a 12-year trophy drought before winning the MTN FA Cup.
His contract with the club will fade out in December this year but the experienced defender has yet to extend his contract with the three-time African champions.
According to the Communications Director of the club, they are still engaging the player to stay but it will take time and if he refuses to stay he will play abroad.
Opare Addo made this statement via an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim Gattuso on Accra-based Original FM.
“Alhassan is having a running contract with us. We’ve engaged him but until the end of the season we aim to work with him again and we are expecting positive news. For players, it will take time to agree. You need to go into the mind of the player to know what he wants.
“He will continue to play with Hearts.
“I have a personal relationship with him.”
“If not Hearts, his next destination will be abroad” Opare Addo confirmed.
Currently, Alhassan is leading the Phobians as the captain since Samuel Inkoom came in for Fatawu Mohammed after the 1-0 defeat to Asante Kotoko.
Alhassan who made his national team debut in 2019 in a friendly game against Namibia is regarded as one of the top defenders in the Ghanaian top-flight league.
