The Ghana Premier League (GPL) for the 2020/2021 season has been scheduled to commence on Friday, October 31, 2020.
In his 17th address to the nation on government’s measures against the fight of the coronavirus spread in the country, president of the republic, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo announced the lifting of the ban on all contact sports including football, and has announced a return of the GPL and the National Division One Football League.
“After due consultations with the Ghana Football Association, it’s been decided that the Ghana Premier League and the Division One Football league will restart on Friday, 30th October, with a full regime of testing of the players, technical and management staff”, the President announced.
Meanwhile, all clubs will be required to conduct mandatory covid-19 tests for all players and other staff before official training sessions begin. On spectators, the President granted a considerable latitude, saying, all stadia would only be allowed to be filled up to 25% of its full capacity.
“No spectators will be allowed in the training centres, and when actual competition resumes, seating at all stadia would be limited to 25% capacity to ensure social distancing. Wearing of masks by spectators at stadia will be mandatory”, he insisted.
For other sporting activities, their restart “will be determined on a case by case basis pending a consultation between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the respective sports associations”.
