Founded in 1935 and regarded as the second oldest existing football club in Ghana after Accra Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko has attained 85 years of existence today, and the club has issued a statement through the office of the CEO, to celebrate the Anniversary in a grand style.
The Ghana Premier League (GPL) record winners boast of 23 domestic league titles, 2 CAF Champions League titles, 9 FA Cups among other ceremonial trophies. In a club statement signed by the club CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah to mark the 85th Anniversary, the club described the year 2020 as a year of “reincarnation of Asante Kotoko”, saying, it marks the beginning of a new generation for the club.
“85 years in the life of every creature symbolizes the end of one generation and the beginning of another. It is no surprise that 2020, despite being a difficult year for the entire world, has triggered the reincarnation of Asante Kotoko”, the statement read.
Adjudged Africa’s club of the 20th Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), the club has come a long way since then and now eyes a chance of repeating the same feat in the 21st Century or later. The club believes that achieving such accolade is still possible and urges fans to rally behind the club to bring back the glory days.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era to propel our great club to be the African club of another century. To achieve this requires the support and hard work of every individual supporter and stakeholder”, the statement hoped.
