Legon Cities Football Club woke from slumber to produce a scintillating comeback in the Ghana Premier League as they came from behind twice to beat AshantiGold SC 5-2 in their match day 10 fixture at the Accra Sports stadium on Friday.
The struggling Royals welcomed title the contending Miners to the Accra Sports Stadium in search of their second win of the current campaign, and had their objectives achieved after saving their best for the last to out muscle coach Milovan Cirkovic’s side. The result of the victory has temporarily seen the Royals moved to 15th place in the standings with 9 points ahead of the other Premier League matches to be played on Saturday and Sunday.
Coach Bashir Hayford and his charges survived an early scare from the visitors after winger Yaw Annor broke the deadlock as early as the 6th minute into the first department of the game to leave the home side trailing. The early strike from the Miners stirred up fighting spirit in Legon Cities who quickly responded 4 minutes later with a strike from Nasiru Moro to restore parity.
However, Ashanti Gold Sporting Club relentlessly pressed harder to look for a second goal which they eventually found in the 32nd minute when Yaw Annor struck for the second time to put the visitors ahead once more. The Miners however, failed to keep their lead for long as striker Jonah Attuquaye scored for Legon Cities to bring the score to 2-2 before half time.
Ashanti Gold became weakened in the second half when the engine of their midfield, Appiah McCarthy was forced out of the game through injury. Legon Cities took advantage to boss the game till Baba Mahama put them ahead just four minutes into the second half with a nice pass from David Cudjoe.
David Cudjoe, after assisting Baba Mahama to score the 3rd goal for Cities, rose to put the game beyond repairs for the visitors when he struck in quick succession to make it 5-2 for the Royals. Ashanti Gold had the chance to reduce the deficit from the 12 yard spot but Legon Cities goalkeeper Fatau Dauda saved Yaw Annor’s penalty kick to deny him what would have been a first hat-trick for the former Bechem United winger in the ongoing campaign.
Legon Cities ended the match with 10 men after central defender Nicholas Mensah was sent off for a hard tackle. Match Day 11 of the GPL will see Legon Cities face Inter Allies FC while Ashanti Gold will host Asante Kotoko at the Obuasi Len Clay sports stadium in the Ashanti derby.
