Reigning Ghana Premier League champions Hearts of Oak have secured a sixth domestic double following their win over Ashanti Gold in the MTN FA CUP final.
The Phobians clinched what is their 11th domestic league cup- most by any club, defeating the Miners in a long shout-outs.
The Rainbow team have now won their first double since 2000.
Hearts of Oak got off to a bright start as Isaac Mensah put Patrick Razak through on goal but goalkeeper, Kofi Mensah was quick of his line to parry the ball off Razak’s feet for a corner.
Minutes later Benjamin Afutu stroke the put with his header from Fatawu Mohammed’s corner.
The game continued to see no goals as both sides exhibited good football to entertain the fans.
The sides held onto the ball when in possession but Hearts looked slightly dangerous on the attack than Ashanti Gold.
Hence, the first half ended goalless.
The second department started on a slow tempo as the League champions saw more of the ball.
Robert Addo Sowah nearly gave away the lead afte Amos Addai nicked the ball off the former but the latter’s shot from a difficult angle was comfortably saved.
The game turned on it head and Hearts of Oak begun to pile pressure on the one time competition champions.
Raddy Ovouka fired one from distance which took a deflection but couldn’t beat Kofi Mensah in post.
On the 70th minute, Ashanti Gold nearly took the lead through Addai whose shoot was cleared off the by Mohammed Alhassan before Seth Osei blasting over the bar from the rebound.
Just on the stroke of full time Daniel Afriyie shot from inside the box that went across the face of goal after Ansah-Botchway had put him through.
The match then travelled to extra time with no goals.
Right after the short break Seth Osei had an opportunity to put Ashanti Gold in front but host effort went across the face of goal.
The wait for a goal in a much entertaining final was still not coming and the barren match progressed into the second half of extra-time.
After eventful and keenly contented 120 minutes, penalties had to decide the winner of the 2020/2021 MTN FA Cup.
Hearts of Oak won 7-8 on penalties.
