Donkor refutes the notion of the GPL’s declining quality, highlighting Lamptey as a testament to the league’s caliber. He asserts that players like Lamptey can rival the legacy of past greats such as Oduro, Ishmael Addo, and Opoku Nti.
“We have quality players in the GPL who can match with players like Stephen Oduro, Ishmael Addo, Opoku Nti, and others. Richmond Lamptey is comparable to Stephen Oduro”
“People had loved for players like Malik Jaber, Stephen Oduro, and Charles Taylor and the rest because they played in our league for a longer period of time, and it is why their names are mentioned always. However, no one can persuade me that the league is of low quality”
Despite acknowledging Oduro’s stature as a long-serving member, Donkor insists that Lamptey’s potential impact on Kotoko’s future remains uncertain. He attributes fans’ nostalgia for past players to their prolonged tenure in the league.
“The current GPL players are of high quality, but fans can’t get enough of them because they’re always leaving the country. Stephen Oduro may be slightly ahead of Lamptey because Oduro has played in the local league for a long time, but Lamptey’s future at Kotoko is uncertain at the moment”
Oduro, affectionately known as “Tico Tico,” enjoyed a distinguished sixteen-year tenure with Kotoko, securing numerous domestic league titles and making significant contributions to the club’s continental campaigns.
His illustrious career spanned international recognition with the Black Starlets and a solitary appearance for the Black Stars in 2003.
