Assistant coach of the Ghana national football team, Roger De Sá, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s restructured technical bench, insisting the team is fully committed to bringing excitement back to supporters ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The four-times Africa Cup of Nations winners, since 2019 struggled to exhibit their prowess including Continental tournaments. Falling short in Egypt 2019 followed with one in 2021 AFCON held in Cameroon, Ivory Coast 2023 was not an exception. Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup also saw Ghana finished 3rd in their group which had Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.
In 2025 AFCON edition, Ghana failed to qualify drawing the line for a change in the technical direction.
The new technical direction comes after the departure of former head coach Otto Addo in March, following back-to-back friendly defeats against Austria national football team and Germany national football team. Veteran Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz was subsequently appointed to lead the Black Stars into the World Cup.
Ghana face a huge task at the tournament having been placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama in the competition which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Speaking during an appearance on the Beyond The Whistle podcast, assistant to Carlos Queiroz, Roger De Sá explained that the coaching staff are concentrating on building cohesion and ensuring the players are fully prepared for the task ahead.
“We are here to do our best and make Ghanaians happy. If Carlos does his job, there is none better than him,” Roger said.
“We will pick our targets as they come. If our players play to their abilities, we have a realistic chance to progress,” he added.
The Black Stars as part of preparation for the Mundial, scheduled to play international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
Ghana will open their World Cup journey against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before taking on England at the Boston Stadium on June 23. Their final group encounter will be against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.
