Former Black Stars forward Mahatma Otoo has called on Ghanaians to remain realistic about the national team’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup while continuing to support the players and technical team.
Speaking on the expectations surrounding Ghana’s campaign, Otoo admitted that winning the tournament may be beyond the team at the moment, but stressed that fans want to see the Black Stars perform competitively and progress beyond the group stage.
“We have to be realistic. We can’t say we are going to win the World Cup,” he said.
“What the fans are expecting is to have a good tournament and not exit in the group stages.”
The former Accra Hearts of Oak SC striker also shared his thoughts on the coaching change involving former Black Stars boss Otto Addo.
“I was hoping they would keep Otto Addo until after the World Cup but unfortunately they’ve sacked him for an experienced coach,” Otoo stated.
Despite his disappointment over Otto Addo’s departure, Mahatma Otoo urged Ghanaians to rally behind new head coach Carlos Queiroz and the team ahead of the tournament.
“We know we won’t win the World Cup but let’s support the team and the coach,” he added.
“I want us to go past the group stage, at least.”
The Black Stars are currently preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with hopes high that the experienced Queiroz can guide Ghana to an improved showing on football’s biggest stage.
Ghana will face Panama, England and Croatia in Group L of the tournament.
