Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has stressed that success in football is measured by results rather than possession statistics, as Ghana following Ghana’s draw against Wales.
Speaking after Ghana recorded 34% possession in a 1-1 draw against Wales, the experienced Portuguese tactician pointed to the recent UEFA Champions League final as an example that dominating possession does not always guarantee victory as the game was decided on penalties although Paris Saint German, eventual winners, had all the possession.
“We saw in the Champions League final where one team had 70 or 80% of possession, but the game is not only about possession,” Queiroz said.
The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach emphasized that teams must be effective in both attack and defence if they want to achieve success at the highest level.
“The game is about having the skill to put the ball in the net, defend your goal, and win the game,” he explained.
Queiroz’s remarks reflect his pragmatic approach to the game, with the coach prioritising efficiency, discipline and results over attractive statistics.
As Ghana prepares for the World Cup campaign, the Black Stars manager believes the ultimate objective remains clear regardless of playing style.
“This is a winning business,” Queiroz added.
The Black Stars will be hoping to translate that philosophy into positive results when they begin their World Cup journey against Panama on June 17, with expectations high as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression on the global stage.
