Ghana Premier League giants, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club is reportedly considering the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex as their home venue for the first round of the upcoming 2026/27 season due to the poor state of Baba Yara Sports Stadium according to reports.
The Baba Yara Stadium is set undergo extensive upgrades aimed at modernizing facilities and improving safety standards. The renovation project includes replanting new grass on the pitch and upgrading spectator amenities. However, these improvements are not expected to be completed before the beginning of the next league season, leaving the club without its traditional home ground for their opening home matches.
Sources close to the club confirm that officials have been exploring alternative venues to ensure minimal disruption during this period. After thorough evaluations, the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese has emerged as the preferred option for their home games.
Kotoko will commence their 2026/27 campaign away to Debibi United, a newly-promoted side in September. Following their opener, the Porcupine Warriors are slated to host Heart of Lions at their temporary home ground. This fixture presents an early challenge but also an opportunity for the team to set a positive tone despite the stadium situation.
The 2025/26 season was somewhat disappointing for the Reds. The team finished in eighth position on the Ghana Premier League table—a result that fell short of their usual standards—and failed to defend their FA Cup title. With such setbacks, there is a renewed sense of urgency within the club to bounce back strongly following the appointment of a new coach Erik Tinkler.
