Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan has lauded Otto Addo’s performance despite many Ghanaians considering him as an average manager.

Otto Addo has had the privilege to coach, the Black Stars twice but failed to impress Ghanaian football pundits and lovers after failing to get Ghana through to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations which was played in Morocco.

The Dortmund trainee was fired in March, following abysmal results choked against Austria and Germany in the international friendlies. It was the last straw that, broke the camel’s back leading to his sack.

He, however qualified Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, ex-Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan defended the tenure of Otto Addo insisting the gaffer did what he had to do with the players available for him.

“For me, he [Otto Addo] did what he had to do. The caliber of players he had, he had to use them”

“People were very disappointed when he didn’t qualify for the AFCON. So that mark, was already there and it got to a time the friendly games were also part of it, we weren’t getting the results that we should get”, he said.

Gyan stressed that, coaches decisions are often dictated by results rather than a coach’s overall quality and Otto Addo is no exception.

“It happens everywhere, you can be the best coach in the World but when results is not coming the way people want it, they can make a decision and it doesn’t mean you’re a bad coach” Asamoah said.

He continued to highlight Otto Addo’s achievement as Black Stars head coach saying; “Although we dwid not qualify to the AFCON, he was able to qualify for the World Cup”

“So what Otto did for Ghana is good for him; he was able to qualify for the world Cup. So, I would like to thank him for what he has done for Ghana and I wish him nothing but the best for Ghana”.

Ghana has quickly moved away from Otto Addo to announce Portuguese 73-year old trainer Carlos Queiroz as his replacement amid the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is expected to begin his tenure with a friendly against Mexico on May 22, 2026 as part of Ghana’s World Cup preparations.
