Arsenal eventually won and secured the transfer of Thomas Partey. The Gunners paid 50 million euros, the amount of the release clause, to snatch the midfielder from Atlético Madrid.
Arsenal finally complied with Atlético Madrid’s demands. After weeks of negotiating with the Spanish club in an attempt to lure Thomas Partey, the English club finally settled to pay the Ghanaian midfielder’s release clause. So it’s 50 million euros that fall into the coffers of the Colchoneros but it is also a key element of Diego Simeone that goes away. The transfer has been official for a few moments.
“Arsenal has filed with La Liga the amount of Thomas Partey’s termination clause,” the Madrid club’s statement reads on its official website. Mikel Arteta must be happy to see the player sign for 5 years. The Gunners coach has finally secured the much-desired midfield for weeks. Of course, he will not see Houssem Aouar in the red jersey of his club but it is a top recruit who joins him in England.
Partey has been the subject of intense negotiations
Arsenal lost Lucas Torreira, who went the other way by being loaned to Atlético, and Mattéo Guendouzi was at Hertha Berlin, but with the black star international in his ranks (26 caps, 9 goals), the London club offered themselves a player capable of making him a milestone in the league and on the European stage. Partey was also courted by many clubs, such as PSG.
It’s a long soap opera that just closed. It had started several months ago, at a time when the player and his entourage had turned down offers from Atlético Madrid to extend. The release clause of only 50 million euros allowed the player to negotiate better deals elsewhere, such as in England for example. For, indisputable holder of the Madrid club for three seasons, Partey knew he was being courted. This transfer is proof of that.
