The day after the elimination in the Champions League against Olympique Lyonnais, Maurizio Sarri had an appointment with his leaders to discuss his future. And the decision was made: the Italian coach was thanked.
Sacred champion of Italy a few weeks ago, for the ninth time in a row, Juventus still had a mission in this 2019-2020 season: to go as far as possible in the Champions League. After their 1-0 defeat at the Groupama Stadium a few months ago, the Bianconeri had to reverse the trend on Friday night on their turf against Olympique Lyonnais, for their eighth final return of C1. Unfortunately, Cristiano Ronaldo, and his team, did not fulfill their mission despite a success (2-1) at home.
An elimination that inevitably raised questions. And especially on the future of Maurizio Sarri. Arriving on the Turin bench this season, the Italian technician was not unanimous, especially at the end of the year with a rather poor game offered by his men in the league. Despite a contract running until June 2022, his future was therefore uncertain. The transalpine media quickly put the subject on the front page on Saturday morning. And the verdict just came down.
Simone Inzaghi as future coach?
The leaders of the Old Lady met recently to discuss the future of Maurizio Sarri, and he was simply thanked! It was first the Italian media that announced the news before the release of the Juventus statement at around 2.45pm: “Juventus announce that Maurizio Sarri has been sacked as first team coach. The club would like to thank the coach for writing a new page in Juventus history with the victory of the ninth consecutive Scudetto, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all categories of Italian football.”
From now on, the Bianconeri will have to look to the future and find Maurizio Sarri’s replacement. For several hours, La Gazzetta dello Sport and other Italian dailies have announced that Simone Inzaghi, currently coach of Lazio, is at the top of the list of Turin leaders. But the names of Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino were also mentioned.
